RMS Winmor (email over radio) BBS System

The BBS system is growing, with 26 members on line.

The BBS system is proving itself reliable and effective for information exchange and distribution. At the same time, the TAPRN voice net continues to be challenged by propagation, QRN, QRM and low participation.

1. All TAPRN members are strongly engouraged to equip for digital modes, including Winmor using the RMS Express software.  No additional equipment is needed (in most cases) and assistance with technical issues is readily available from existing users.  Information and free software available at:  http://www.winlink.org/WINMOR/.

2.  Participation in the TAPRN BBS system is limited to TAPRN members and requires registration via a sysop.  TAPRN members interested in participating in the TAPRN BBS system must send Winlink email to either W0ECM via w0ecm@winlink.org or KB1TCE via kb1tce@winlink.org.  Include your name, call, city, state and commercial email address

3. TAPRN BBS participants should ACCESS THE BBS REGULARLY (once daily at a minimum). The BBS system issues periodic surveys and exercises for information exchange and operational readiness assessment, as well as TAPRN bulletins. You may also exchange private messages with other TAPRN members via the BBS.

4. Make a renewed committment to participation in the TAPRN voice net…3.818000Mhz, Sunday evenings at 2100 EST (Monday 0200Z). Volunteers are needed for Net Manager and Net Control duty. If you are able to fill either of these positions, please contact jess, W0ECM: jess@acresoflove.com.

Fulfillment of the TAPRN mission will only come about through the active participation and support of the membership.

Will you be “prepared”?

I originally addressed this suggestion to Jess. He asked me to post it here:
I would like to propose we try a round table style “net” on a DAILY basis at a given time and on a given frequency both to be determined. I am currently a part of a group who meets every evening on 80m. There is no net control per say. Everybody just drops their call and is acknowledged by the group. General discussion is the name of the game with this group, but we could gear a similar round table discussion group more toward topics relating to preparedness. The point is we will all know that someone will be there on whatever freq we choose at whatever time we choose every day. Personally I prefer mornings as I am an early riser. 80m has pretty good propagation before sunrise, but I am certainly not opposed to getting something together on 40m. Your thoughts???

    Ridge,

Are you thinking along the lines of voice or a digi type net?
I am also an early riser and would have interest in your idea. Before sunrise 80m is pretty good, minimal traffic and good distance. One possible issue for 40m is before sunrise the band is likely to be ‘long’ in that while I could easily work someone in SC, working in MO would be difficult. But am open to a consensus.
    Any other ‘early birds’ opinions?

    Good morning Larry,

I was thinking of an SSB/Voice Rag Chew Net. This morning I was parked on 3818 from about 0500 EDT until 0700 EDT. I did hear a couple of folks talking. Spoke to one of them who said there used to be a bunch who met to rag chew on that frequency, but not many showed up anymore. We might have to pick another frequency. I plan to listen in on 3818 for a few more days. I live in North Florida, and one of the parties chatting this AM was in New Jersey. 80m might very well work out before sunrise. After sunrise we will probably want 40.

    Larry, Ridge,
I would join an early am net as I get up early most days. 80m works well for me located in NW Arkansas. I usually hear Fla well.
I’ll dial in 3818 for a few days to test, as well.
    I’m also good with 40m

Great Kirk! I’ll be there. My call is N3JUY. I’ll drop my call a few times starting around 0500 EDT or so. If there’s other traffic on 3818, try going up 6kc or so.

    Ridge & Kirk,

I will fire up on 3818 in the morning and join in, I hope. 80m has been a bit down for propagation at least in the evening hours, so has 40m for that matter. The time would work out for me to be 0400 but normally have coffee at that time so no problem. Hope to hear you both!

    Noise and more noise.

My end and 80m was very difficult this morning, noise was S7/8! Put out my call a few times, nothing heard.Sorry guys. Will listen other mornings now that I know.

    Good morning,
80 was indeed tough this morning. I must confess though, I got a late start and didn’t get on the air until 0520 or so. Heard a couple of people chatting at around 0600. I’ll continue to monitor 3818 for the next few days. Then perhaps we should discuss alternative frequencies/times. I think the idea of a daily “meeting place” is a sound one. We just need to find the right combination of times, frequencies and band conditions. I can be reached also at n3juy@arrl.net or n3juy@winlink.org .
